life – you are supposed to sing or dance as the music is being played

Oh Alan Watts… I just had another listen to your wise words at Why Your Life is not a Journey

Hearing this recording was the reason I started my blog about living with more Minimalist ideas and more thought.

And jotting down the thoughts of our ‘journey’ is bringing me focus and joy and conscious living as we learn rather to dance through life.

But listening again to these words:

“…because we’ve simply cheated ourselves the whole way down the line. We thought of life by analogy with a journey, with a pilgrimage which had a serious purpose at the end and the thing was to get to that end – success or whatever it is, or maybe heaven after you’re dead. But we missed the point the whole way along. It was a musical thing and you were supposed to sing or dance as the music was being played”

Every time I hear these words I just want to hit refresh and try again and shake it up and live in the light, with joy and dancing and love.

And then I looked into the soundtrack to the Alan Watts video. The song is “Saturn” by Sleeping at Last.

Such beautiful lyrics:

You taught me the courage of stars before you left.
How light carries on endlessly, even after death.
With shortness of breath, you explained the infinite.
How rare and beautiful it is to even exist. I couldn’t help but ask
For you to say it all again.
I tried to write it down
But I could never find a pen.
I’d give anything to hear
You say it one more time,
That the universe was made
Just to be seen by my eyes.
I couldn’t help but ask
For you to say it all again.
I tried to write it down
But I could never find a pen.
I’d give anything to hear
You say it one more time,
That the universe was made
Just to be seen by my eyes.
With shortness of breath, I’ll explain the infinite
How rare and beautiful it truly is that we exist.
